The eThekwini municipality has noted with dismay disinformation that have been fed
to the media to the effect that the stadium is on the brink of collapse.
The city hereby states categorically that this iconic jewel is fully operational and
compliant with the relevant legislations to host events and functions of any type. This
is in accordance with its city’s structural engineers and various football and event
regulatory bodies.
This year, it will be hosting numerous PSL league fixtures and lifestyle events. Last
year it successfully hosted mega events such as the MTN 8 Final 2022/23, Comrades
Marathon 2022 and the Certification handover of AmaZulu King. Preparations for the
action-packed Monster Jam International Show due to take place on 6 May 2023, are
at an advanced stage.
Anywhere in the world, designs do age and like any structure of this size and age, it is
currently undergoing major maintenance. The maintenance being carried out
encompasses both attractions, structural aspect, and retail sections. The timing of this
initiative coincides with the unfolding process of filling vacant shops that will see a rise
in retail occupancy levels before the end of the year.
Huge strides are being made to upgrade communication network infrastructure. The
stadium is also due for a second phase of the major assessment in accordance with
the asset management plan roll out. Local and international engineering firms will
conduct this assessment between March and June 2023.
To date, Mabhida towers above all stadia that were constructed to host the 2010
Soccer World Cup matches.
The country and the world must be rest assured that this facility is safe and poses no
threat to anyone deciding to visit it.
We therefore call for a stop to disinformation peddled by unscrupulous groupings
whose sole mission is to see event organisers snubbing the city. We want to reiterate
that the facility is structurally sound and safe to host major events.
